NEUROGENESIS: AN INTROSPECTIVE GALLERY
Meaning of the Exhibition, Neurogenesis: An Introspective Gallery.
Neurogenesis or the new neuron formation in the adult brain, mainly occurs in the hippocampus. This is a brain area named after the seahorse, or ´´hippocampus´´ in latin, due to its anatomical similitude. Adult neurogenesis is crucial in basic brain functions such as memory, learning or emotional processes. For those reasons, adult Neurogenesis is a key target in the future treatment of neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders, where this cellular mechanism is impaired critically.
There are good news in this scientific field. Adult neurogenesis is regulated through positive and negative stimuli in our brain. That is the reason why Sylvia´s called the process our ´´Brain Gym´´. Indeed, adult neurogenesis is, by nature, facilitated thanks to art, travel, nature, love, socialization, exercise, or learning; while it is impaired due to stress, sadness, alcohol, drugs, or sleep deprivation.
With this exhibition, Sylvia Ortega Martinez aims to evoke emotional responses in their audience, through a variety of photography’s of those themes. The last goal of Sylvia Ortega Martinez is to generate an increase in the neurogenesis process of their audience through the positive stimuli offered by her photographs.
